In Oslavia, near the border with Slovenia, Stanko Radikon grows 11 hectares of grapes and produces unique wines. Having inherited from his father a winery created in the twentieth century, Stanko decided to produce orange wines organically. In 1995, he abandoned the use of chemicals in wine production, and in 2002 completely stopped adding sulfites. In the same year, being non-conformist to the core, he created his own bottles (0.5 and 1 liter) and corks that allow wine to age better and make it easier to consume. Stanko's wines are unique due to his energy and the amount of time he devotes to creating each bottle. The grapes are harvested by hand, and fermentation lasts four months. Before being sold, the wine is aged for three years in large wooden barrels, and then another year in bottles. The result is wines that are amazingly complex and deep, which can be stored for years.
This region is known for its white wines. They are produced from a variety of grapes, and this diversity distinguishes the region from other wine regions. Winemakers use non-traditional Italian varieties like Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling and Pinot Bianco, as well as the very "Italian” Pinot Grigio and local Picolit. Many wine critics agree that Friuli is the best white wine region in Italy.
